A Contextual Focus - John Rutledge Architect

Upon returning to Southwestern Ontario, after studying architecture, I was still not able to answer the question, "what style is my house or building?" A History of Canadian Architecture course
had only taught about pure architectural styles. I soon realized that homes and buildings in Southwestern Ontario were seldomly built using only one architectural  style and historically
are a mix of several architectural styles. My architectural career embarked on observing how architectural styles were and are juxtaposed to form the architectural context of Southwestern Ontario. Through an ongoing exploration of styles and details the Firm of John Rutledge Architect focuses strongly on contextual design which enables restoration, renovation, alteration, addition, and new work to sympathetically compliment the original architectural vocabulary of designated, historic and older buildings, houses, and the context of their sites, areas and districts.

For new buildings and houses, this focus is parralleled with a well rounded knowledge of architectural styles from which inspiration can be drawn to develop ideas. Ideas for new buildings incorporate and reflect layers of time, cultural customs, and personal preferences.

A range of building types from residential homes, historic structures, small public buildings, institutional, retail, and office projects are worked on. This diversity enables John Rutledge to maintain a fresh approach toward development of workable solutions which help people through all aspects of their building projects from start to finish.

The firm of John Rutledge Architect respects the phrase......

"Architecture is a balance between function and delight"......

and realizes that when these two componenets are balanced with......

energy conservation and cost effeciency throughout......

the design, construction, and reality of building a project...... the solution will be a succesful one.
